The Be More Pirate network is a group of autonomous rebels who are out to cause good trouble by standing up to the status quo.

From healthcare to education to big business, we overcome personal limitations, upend the status quo in our areas of work, and find co-conspirators with the aim to be a little more rebellious and a lot more pirate.

Our values and the behaviours we uphold are detailed in the code below.

 Find Other Pirates

Have a scroll around our network map for individuals, projects and organisations connected to the movement. A few quick pointers:

  • Zoom in and out to see the full map ( use the + and - buttons in the top right hand corner), and click on the circles to see a person’s full profile (it will appear on the left).

  • Scroll down the profile to see more information about their location, contact details etc.

  • If you want to filter for different people, click on the filter icon (the three lines on the right hand side of the map), this will give you different options. You can colour or rearrange the connections to highlight different fields. E.g. if you click ‘connect by’ and select ‘nearest town/city’ the map will rearrange itself according to people’s location.

  • To add yourself to the map, click on the button below it, and fill out the form!

Modern Mutineers

Since Be More Pirate was published in 2018, we have seen thousands of pirates surface all over the world.

Our new book How to: Be More Pirate tells the full story of how the book became a movement, inspiring and provoking action.

To give you a flavour, here a few stories from our crew.

Got a tale to tell?

If you’ve challenged the status quo and have an interesting story to tell that could inspire others or, even better, if you have used the book to guide you, then we’d like to hear from about it!

 Community Code.

Principles:

SHARE POWER

We redistribute power so that decisions and actions can be made by people in the community.

VALUE DIFFERENCE

We embrace the richness of human life experience as a valuable asset and actively seek to include people with diverse experiences and perspectives.

CHOOSE COLLABORATION

We draw strength from our collaboration, our connection and our responsibility to one another.

EARN AND MAINTAIN TRUST

We believe trusting relationships are the bedrock of meaningful change so practice openness, transparency and accountability.

challenge

We ask difficult questions of ourselves and others, agitating and telling the truth when it is the right thing to do. We’re not afraid of shaking things up.

be prepared to BREAK THE RULES

We know that too many rules uphold systemic inequality and need to be examined and challenged regularly. To keep our code on the edge, we regularly challenge our own rules.

PROTECT WHAT MATTERS

We protect people and planet by respecting boundaries and putting human and environmental welfare before the need to make a tidy profit.

Behaviours:

1. No Surprises

To ensure we make transparency and honesty a priority we do not try to hide our mistakes or withhold information or opinions. We voice any concerns we have at the earliest opportunity. We ask every question on our mind, even the stupid ones – especially those, they are the most valuable.

2. Forgive Fast

We all make mistakes, and something always goes wrong. We do not stay with the anger and frustration but forgive fast and commit ourselves to working on the solution. We don’t carry on playing the blame game or carrying resentment, we express our emotions and let them go (may involve swearing).

3. Keep your ego in check - We and Me

No one person is more important than the collective. We are all fully committed to the shared objectives and to do whatever is required of us. We all have our own agendas but we do not seek status above others, and we do not get hung up on ourselves. No one is as smart as everyone.

4. Be your word

Do what you say you will do, when you say you will do it. If you are unable to guarantee you can meet a request, then say so and make a counter offer that you can deliver on or just hand it back. If during the course of carrying out something you realise circumstances are going to make you miss your commitment, say so immediately (see Rule 1. No Surprises)

5. Take Responsibility

We encourage everyone to make a contribution to the community. This doesn’t mean working when you shouldn’t or volunteering for things you don’t want to. It means taking responsibility for yourself by understanding what kind of contribution you can make, protecting your own boundaries when needed, and being receptive to feedback from others.

6. Unlimited Imagination

There is nothing that is too silly, unrealistic, stupid or ridiculous. Let your imagination run riot. Work on removing your limiting beliefs and constraints on your thinking and help others remove theirs. We encourage each other to push the boundaries, to think the unimaginable.

7. Argue the issue not the person

Conflict is inevitable in a diverse group of people, but we always criticise the issue being discussed and not the person raising it. No idea is above scrutiny (even being a pirate), but personal criticism or unkindness can do lasting damage.
