TH!NK FC
This is an adapted extract from How to Be More Pirate
What might it look like if we were to truly reorganise society according to fairer, more democratic, economic, and social models, so that official bodies more closely resembled the structure of pirate crews?
In Coalville, an ex-mining town in the East Midlands with a population of about 35,000, a small crew have set up an organisation called TH!NK FC that aims to radically reorganise and redistribute the power. Inspired by a blend of Co-operative Principles, Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), and Be More Pirate, it has one goal: to level the playing field.
It is led by Deana Wildgoose and Ian Wilson, and they are using TH!NK FC to launch Coalville C. A. N, a community benefit society that will allow local people to own local buildings and decide what to do with them. Their idea is a clear representation of the pirate principles of reorganise and redistribute power and has a shot at changing the relationship between citizen and state, in Coalville. And they have a pirate code of course.
But this group is firmly about action. They’ve put in a bid to buy two Co-operative sites in the town and now the Central England Co-operative board is coming together to decide the fates of these buildings. More details of their financial plan, and phased plan for how to use the site in order to help Coalville realise it’s potential are available Please get in touch if you‘d like more information.
