Break the tyranny of email culture

In How to: Be More Pirate, one of the small bold actions taken by Kath Smythe’s crew was to add a few bullet points to their email signature to show that they were going to think differently about the impact of email. We’d suggesting adopting one or all of these, or adapting them to suit your own purposes.

• Thinking before I email – can I have a conversation instead?

• Taking protected time away from email and spending it focusing on the stuff that will make the biggest difference.

• Checking my tone – am I structuring my email in a way that I’d be pleased to receive?

• If it’s bad news, I won’t deliver it by email.

Other teams have added elements of the pirate code into the end of email signatures in order to remind themselves regularly and visually, of the values they want to live day to day.
