Be More Pirate Youth programme

The future needs a different kind of leadership. In 2022, we’re launching an immersive, group leadership programme for 18-25 year olds.

The next generation are fed up with widespread injustice and inequality, where traditional leadership no longer has the answers, or the political will to address it. They are already beginning to speak out and rebel, with movements like Fridays for Future gaining traction.

Alex and Sam have spent three years inside a diverse range of workplaces listening to everyone from nurses to corporate CEOs express their fears about the future. The message has been clear: we need leaders who are willing to work in a different way; to cultivate courage, imagination and write new rules. We’ve teamed up with some expert pirates from the community to create an ambitious programme that will support this mission.

What does it look like?

It is a flexible 6-8 week group leadership course in how to be a pirate captain, with a mixture of online learning and classroom based sessions. Rooted in the ideas laid out in the books Be More Pirate and How to Be More Pirate, it uses tried and tested methods that have helped companies and teams across the world to rewrite their rules. We’re also partnering with members of the Be More Pirate Pirate community from the worlds of Business, Arts and Education, to give access to real world examples of success and failure in disruption.

Whether they are ambitions are to start a campaign, a business, or be better equipped for the future workplace, these emerging Captains will be led through six “Territories”, undertaking practical activities that encourage experimentation:

1. Joining the crew: introduction to the group and the code for this adventure

2. Becoming a Pirate: understanding the true history of pirates and channeling the pirate spirit as one of social change and responsibility

3. Breaking Rules: when rebellion is the responsible choice; creating your own moral compass and learning how to constructively challenge every day rules

4. Making Rules: taking your imagination to the edges, and creating a vision that others want to follow

5. Codes and Crews: how to work together as a team pirate style: an exercise in self organising, conflict prevention and values based decision making.

6. Mutiny: putting it all into practice and executing the first steps to launch a campaign, project, business or something entirely new.

By the end of the Emerging Captains programme, the group will understand how to demonstrate situational leadership, tell a powerful story, execute simple, strategic actions, and lead with resilience and integrity. They will have met and learned from social entrepreneurs who are already making a difference now and joined a network of like-minded peers ready to set sail on the high seas.

The programme is just the beginning of exploring who and what they could become.
